I Love Me

By Sally Morgan & Ambelin Kwaymullina
Reviewed by Mia Macrossan
Here’s a little board book made by two well known children’s book creators aimed at the very young which celebrates being yourself.
Using occasional rhymes and the repetition of I love followed by lists of random aspects of themselves they love, eg, I love me! I love my eyes. I love my nose. I love the way my curly hair grows, they encourage readers to regard themselves positively.
Sound and action words such as Tap, tap, tap, Thump, thump, thump, Twirl, twirl, twirl and Zing, zing, zing interupt this litany at regular intervals. It concludes with If I was as tall as a tree with worms for hair. and clouds for arms. and grass for feet. I’d still love me., so love yourself no matter what you are.
The illustrations use indigenous motifs and bright and cheerful colours. The teaching notes list themes of self-esteem, individuality, mental health and creativity which could be a bit of a stretch since this book is aimed at babies and toddlers. Maybe if teachers use it with older children, but then why is it a board book? There is also a teaching activity which is draw an I love me self-portrait.
Aimed at children up to 2 but the teaching activities are for older children.
