The Brave Little Whale

By Charlotte Manning
Reviewed by Mia Macrossan
Author/illustrator Charlotte Manning uses mixed media, painting and stencil in her stiory of Uki, a little Humpback whale who faces some big challenges as he travels in the deep blue ocean with his pod.
He is used to his wise old grandpa Yuka being the leader but now that cousin Amka leads things are different. There are dangers – storms, sharks, orcas, and nets, one of which traps Amka. As whales must surface to breathe, old abandoned fishing nets on the seabed can be a real hazard. At this point the whales are attacked by orcas and their behaviour is truly remarkable. Can Uki remember the song his grandfather used to sing and will it help save them from the orcas?
This is a beautiful and touching story, gently told from Uki’s point of view. Through him the reader learns how whales travel, about the dangers they face, and what life in the ocean entails.
The dual text on each page tells the story and explains some always interesting facts about whales and natural phenomena. My favourite –  a male humpback composes his own songs, which can change or be passed from pod to pod. the main themes are bravery and compassion while also lightly touching on pollution in the oceans.
The illustrations really extend the story. Charlotte has used a wide range of blues and greens to create rich tones that reveal the movement as well as the colours of the oceans.
This book has plenty of detail to satisy enquiriing minds while the story of Uki will engage readers who like some action and adventure.
