Children’s Historical Fiction Award Longlist
Congratulations to all those creators who made the list. The judges commented on the ‘excellent research, engaging writing and the wide scope and variety of times, places and events ‘ showcased in these stories.
Here is the list in alphabetical order by author:
Moonboy by Anna Ciddor, Allen & Unwin 2025: a time-travelling adventure about the first moon landing.
On Gallant Wings by Helen Edwards, Riveted Press 2025: Family drama set in 1941 when the Japanese are bombing Darwin.
The Mushroom in the Sky by Jackie French, Harper Collins AU 2025: The atomic bomb is dropped on Nagasaki and the world changes forever for Ossie and Kat caught up in the consequenses.
Our History: A House Divided by Claire Hallifax, Walker Books Australia 2025: Family life in Canberra in 1975, the year of Whitlam’s Dismissal.
Trapped! The Entombed Miner of Bonnie Vale by Julia Lawrinson, Fremantle Press 2025: A young boy’s experiences as his father is trapped in the mines.
The Year We Escaped by Suzanne Leal, Harper Collins 2025: Klara and Lucien tell their side of life in the internment camp of Kurs during World War 2.
The Girl in the Painting by Dee White and Sarah Anthony, Walker Books Australia 2025: A glimpse in the life of Susie who became the model for the Tar Boy in Tom Robert’s iconic painting Shearing the Rams.
