One Day Soon

Cristy Burnes’ long list of credentials is impressive and slightly intimidating. Cristy isn’t just an award-winning author but also an internationally renowned expert in science communication, a STEAM ambassador, an innovative storyteller, and an adventure enthusiast. Cristy has written and co-written over fourteen middle-grade books, ranging from non-fiction STEAM to fantasy, but her latest book, One Day Soon, takes on a more personal narrative in the form of a verse novel.
Compared to his brother Archie, Alex, the older, more responsible sibling, is a constant and deep thinker. Alex’s thoughts and concerns establish the poetic narrative of the novel as he navigates the discovery of his uncle Rohan’s sudden and debilitating diagnosis of Motor-Neurone Disease. The novel is divided into four parts: ‘The Beginning,’ ‘The Next Part,’ ‘The Visit,’ and ‘The Discovery.’ Each section delves into the emotional and psychological effects that begin to plague Alex as he witnesses the adversity that takes hold of his loved ones and the lingering presence of this unknown and incurable disease. The poetic structure of each verse varies in style, depending on the topic; familiar moments maintain rigid stanzas, overheard conversations digress asymmetrically across the page, while curious internet searches are bold and repetitious.
Although poetic in style, the language is cohesive and simple to follow, making it easy to read. Burnes has a wonderful way of interweaving metaphors cleverly disguised in concrete language throughout the text; the simplicity of the words never undermines their significant impact. Despite the characters not being discussed in great depth, we get just the right amount of detail to build an emotional attachment and become completely captivated by them.
One Day Soon might hit close to home for any parent who has had to deal with a difficult situation in life and navigate the appropriate ways to inform their children. The story reflects the journey Cristy’s family experienced with genetic Motor Neurone Disease and encourages open and honest conversations about grief and mortality with children. One Day Soon is poignant, heartfelt, and necessary. It’s a quick read, but I caution anyone reading this book in a public space, you will be at a significant risk of ugly crying, so tissues are highly recommended.
Suitable for ages 10 and up, and a great resource for parents, carers and even medical professionals.
