Tiny Good Things

Tiny Good Things’ comes from the dream team who brought us ‘Before We Met’, Gabrielle Tozer and Sophie Beer. Each brings a sense of wonder to the early parenthood experience, particularly the way in which helping a child discover the world can ignite creativity and childlike playfulness in the parent / caregiver too.
In this case, we experience a day in the life of a mother and child, as they step through small moments of keeping busy. We see that it’s a gloomy rainy day, but the mother, as narrator, explains that a big bright world awaits, full of magic. With raincoats and umbrellas their journey begins, through puddles, into gardens, meeting puppies and snails. They read, they dress up, they imagine. Then it’s bubbles, bears and a bedtime book. This is a gentle, rhyming reminder that a young child’s world is small and tiny good things are as meaningful as wild adventures. It celebrates the simplicity of spending time together.
This may also be read as a an allegory for life: similarly suggesting that from the humblest beginnings, there are endless possibilities. Of note are Beer’s stunning illustrations, which begin in greyscale with a hint of yellow, then gradually gain colour as the child encounters new things. The endpapers include space for listing the reader’s own tiny good things.
This is recommended for reading with 3 to 5 year olds, and would make an excellent gift for new parents, who might even use the endpapers to record milestones.
