Andrew Daddo is a well know television personality and writer of children’s stories including Atticus Van Tasticus, Grandma’s Guide to Happiness, and Poo Face. His stories are characterised by warm-hearted appeal and an engaging sense of humour. Bitza is the first in a new junior fiction series that will appeal to many readers.

Jas befriends a dog in the park who wants his ball back. This is the beginning of a love story between a girl and a dog. She’s got a dog with her but he belongs to a neighbour. Bitza follows Jas home but Dad says they must advertise to see if he belongs to anyone. Jas is heartbroken when the ad is answered. What will happen to Bitza now?

Told from the dog’s point of view there is much detail about being scratched, playing with the ball, eating and more. Really this story is an advertisement for having a dog. Cats, no, they are even called ‘a little creepy’ on p 24.

The characterisation of the humans is minimal but effective while Bitza himself is comprehensively realised. He is eager, loyal, playful, a bit drooly and a totally lovable mutt, brought to glorious life by King’s art. His illustrations, liberally sprinkled throughout the text help carry the story along and give an extra sparkle to the prose.

Teachers and parents can talk about stray animals, pet rescues, looking after pets in general and the pros and cons of keeping a dog.

This is perfect for newly independent readers, and any dog or animal lover and I look forward to Bitza’s next adventure.
