Handbooks for Little Humans: Inclusion

Prolific Australian author Zanni Louise has written many books for younger to teen readers, with titles such as Kindness, Gratitude, This is Love, Self Belief and Imagination. This is her third book in an informative and child centred picture book series called Handbooks for Little Humans, aimed at 4- to 8-year-olds. It focusses on Inclusion or when we make the world feel friendly and safer for everyone. Together with the award-winning children’s illustrator Jingting Wang’s animated illustrations, this is another book in the series that will inform and inspire  further discussion between little and big humans.

So, what does it mean to be inclusive?  The author’s kind voice comes through the simple text, informing her friend, the reader, that there are lots of ways to be inclusive. From understanding words such as belonging, welcoming, being curious, listening, to how it feels when you are left out and what it looks like when you behave inclusively, such as listening to someone else’s story or making sure all your friends receive an invitation.

As with the other books in the series, the cover illustration is eye-catching and the pages that follow are arranged into simple bright headings, with questions and answers that are kid friendly encouraging the reader be curious, kind and respectful of others.  I particularly like the double page cartoon story that the child could read to the adult.

A worthwhile resource for home, school and the library. My Social Worker daughter is eager to include this series in her child therapy sessions.
