This book is called Howl-o-ween because it is all about dressing up your pet pooch as something scary to fit in with your own scenario as you dress up to go trick or treating down your street. So Jumping Jack guards a witch’s brew, a French bulldog is dressed up as a lion, and another one gets a medusa head costume. These are only some of the transformed dogs on Spooky Street when the neighbourhood children go out. But the scariest thing on the street turns out to be something with a ‘fuzzy, furry tail’ that goes meow!
Emma Bowd, (Time To Go To The Park, and This is my Happy Place), writes catchy rhymes that bounce merrily along perfectly matched by Lara Porter who fills each page with fun and action, ensuring absolutely nothing is actually scary in any way. Everyone, people and pooches alike are adorable and lovable.
Most children love dressing up and this time of year is an another opportunity to do so. (Parents must be exhausted, we’ve just had Book Week). Whether the children understand what it is all about doesn’t matter here. This is all about the fun and frolics. For a more serious look at Halloween read Possum Tragic: A Tale of Pumpkins & Plastic.
