When Penguin Random House released their Little Golden Book biographies series on pop culture icons, alongside The Beatles was the biography of South Korean-band BTS, released in 2025. With millions of fans and more than forty million physical records sold, BTS is a part of the incredible cultural juggernaut that is K-Pop.
Author Zanni Louise steps into this ultra-hyped world with her new book K-Pop Superfans: Battle of the Bands—And if you think there’d never be a link between Luciano Pavarotti and K-Pop band battles, you’d be wrong. The Spice Girls performed Viva Forever with Pavarotti in 1998 and in 2025 they appeared on Netflix’s band battles show KPOPPED performing their song Wannabe with K-Pop girl group ITSY.
In K-Pop Superfans: Battle of the Bands this is also the world of 14 year old North Queensland school friends Maya, Eden, Daisy and Bean. SUNDAZE is the K-pop band the friends adore and want to emulate with their own band, LUME. The four girls are fun, feisty and committed to band practice, and when a battle of the bands contest offers them a chance of a contract with a celebrated producer and to perform with SUNDAZE in South Korea, the girls are all in.
But all is not well for Maya at home. Her parents have been arguing, a lot, and while she’s been trying to ignore it and focus on the joy and positivity K-Pop and LUME brings, her Dad is moving out. And when LUME’s audition tape scores them a two week trip to the Sydney Opera House to compete for the big prize, Maya doesn’t share her personal worries with her friends.
Despite the excitement, the tension builds as the girls try and deal with the stress of the competition and their fading confidence in their own performance. Maya’s secret doesn’t help and soon the bonds of friendship are stretched to breaking point. It all gets much harder and a lot less fun as they practice and tensions between the bands grow, plus there’s definitely something not quite right about the celebrated producer Gareth St Kind and the way he pushes the girls’ chaperone Sandy around.
In the 2025 runaway film success K-Pop Demon Hunters, K-Pop girl group Huntrix face down the dark forces seeking to rule the human world, and Zanni Louise’s story has a similar vibe. The four girl’s must repair their fractured friendship and Maya must face reality and stop pretending everything’s fine at home if she’s to help her friends overcome bigger threats than the other bands in the competition.
