Grandmother from the East Grandmother from the West

Jacinta Liu’s delightful debut picture book is about a girl who loves her two grandmothers, who each come with their own distinct heritage and traditions. They look different and offer contrasting ways of living: the Eastern grandmother fought in the second World War ( she must be really old!) and the Western one is a natural healer. They have different skills but both have ‘the brightest smiles… the warmest hugs… the biggest hearts’.
Freda Chiu’s illustrations are warm and cozy. The grandmothers are clearly differentiated. I am so glad that the stereotypical granny with glasses and a bun, knitting in a chair, is absent. These two get out and about, have full and meaningful lives which they share with their delighted and admiring grandchild. The endpapers cleverly indicate the different worlds with dragons in the front and swans in the back, just lovely.
Many children’s books show families in all their different permutations and combinations which is marvellous way for children to see themselves and their own families and feel recognized and acknowledged. Here are two traditions shown living in harmony, celebrating difference and sharing across the generations.
