Juniper’s Christmas

Here’s a story for those who like to read about Christmas at any time of the year.
Juniper’s Christmas follows protagonist Juniper Lane as she discovers the science behind the magic of Christmas. The story begins with the sad news that Santa has not been seen for ten years and the joy of Christmas is disappearing from the world. After the death of her father, Juniper and Jennifer (Juniper’s mother) keep a sort of Santa vigil to maintain the spirit of Christmas alive for the homeless population in their local park, as well as those elsewhere. Juniper’s mother then goes missing from their house in North London and Juniper enlists the help of Duchess (a local, poorly homeless woman) and Niko (a mysterious helper who Juniper believes is secretly Santa).
Juniper sets out to find her mother, solve the mystery of Niko, help Duchess get well, as well as bring the community together against an unscrupulous official who wants to clear out the park. It seems like a tall order for a young character, but throw in some flying reindeer, elves and a pinch of magic and see what can happen!
In true Eoin Colfer style, there are sections of the story that show detailed research, but I did find myself glazing over some of these parts. It may appeal to some readers, but I don’t need to know how the pH level of alluvial soil affects the growth rate of Christmas trees.
Juniper’s Christmas is still a magical, creative story that highlights themes of imagination and persistence and will appeal to readers aged 10+ who may enjoy a twist on the magic of Christmas.
