Volcano

By Claire Saxby & Jess Racklyeft
Reviewed by Sophia Evans
‘Deep in the ocean, far beyond the reach of even the brightest sun, the earth quakes.’
Thorough research is interwoven with lyrical language to bring the journey of a new mountain to life. Volcano uncovers the ways in which volcanic events transform underwater and coastal habitats, as well as showing the vital role they play in reshaping the planet’s surface. Saxby’s expressive storytelling makes this complex geological process easy to understand.
The illustrations show the steps of how a volcano forms a new mountain along with various animals that call the new mountain home at each stage of the process – from hagfish and tube worm larvae, to tuna, sharks and seagulls. The dark backgrounds of browns and blacks give the reader a chance to focus on the details of the animals shown in the foreground. The illustrations skilfully combine watercolour, print making, collage with digital art. Jess Racklyeft has a sneak peek on her Instagram of how she created the lava rocks for the book (@jessesmess).
Volcano is another fantastic non-fiction picture book from the creators who brought us Iceberg and Tree. This circular narrative ends where it begins, and will appeal to readers aged 5+.
