Nightweaver  is a debut YA fantasy novel in the popular Romantasy genre. The ambience is grimdark, the pace is relentless and the narrative shot through with a sense of menace that rarely abates.
The story is set in a cruel, violent world with a Nineteenth Century feel. In this world, humans have been either enslaved or driven to piracy by a supernatural race, the eponymous Nightweavers. The main character is a spirited seventeen-year-old pirate named Aster. At the beginning of the book, she and her family are attacked at sea and captured by Nightweavers with murderous intent. All except Aster’s favourite brother, Owen, who is killed by a monster. Enter Will, a powerful Nightweaver, who rescues Aster and family from the gallows and offers them employment on his family’s estate. Aster is drawn to Will in spite of herself, and the two team up to find the monster that killed Owen. Slowly, Aster is drawn in to high-level intrigues with implications for the fates of human and Nightweaver alike.
The book, while featuring a ‘clean’ romance, does not pull punches in the blood and gore department. Aster is a powerfully drawn, self-reliant heroine, fiercely loyal to those she loves and unafraid of either man or monster. Besides being packed with elemental magic, the story has a ‘mystery’ flavour, with clues to the true nature of people and events scattered throughout.
For fans of Romantasy crossed with grimdark. The sequel, Starchaser, is due for release on 6th November 2025.
