The Wicked Ship, a swashbuckling adventure fantasy is the latest novel from Amelia Mellor, much awarded creator of The Grandest Bookshop in the World, The Bookseller’s Apprentice and The Lost Book of Magic, a historical fantasy trilogy based in Melbourne where she lives.
It is the first in the series Oceanforged, which is aimed at a younger audience than her previous novels. Nevertheless The Wicked Ship is still characterised by her trademark impressive detail, awesome villains, a truly engaging main character all presented in a richly realised fantasy world.
Thirteen year old Cori is a desperate ex pirate who tumbles on a quest to find the Oceanforged Armour of long dead Champions. She is a cracker of a creation, ‘the kind of person who chafes at the world’s injustices and has the guts and the drive to do something about them’ (StoryLinks interview). She is passionate and daring and a great friend to the companions she acquires along the way, who,in true fantasy style are complete opposites – Tarn, a boy who can speak to animals and Jem, a drop-out witch.
Amelia has created a complicated world of magic for the land of Aquinta, where people can augment their natural abilities in several different ways. Having a super power appeals to many children but Cori finds that this brings its own challenges and responsibilites. This fascinating world takes inspiration from Amelia’s interest in the natural sciences, a project where she could ‘unleash the nature nerd within‘ (ibid). These topical ecological themes give this adventure an added edge while still suffused with warmth and heart throughout.
I am so glad The Wicked Ship has a satisfying ending while still leaving you wanting more. Recommended for all middle grade adventure fantasy lovers.
