Our Infinite Fates

By Laura Steven
Reviewed by Alison McCaffrey
In an unnamed land, Our Infinite Fates begins centuries ago and introduces a young bride and groom as their wedding is brought to a dramatic and violent end.
Jumping between times and tales, Evelyn and Arden live, love and kill one another repeatedly. Evelyn’s ambition to live beyond an 18th birthday and enjoy a long, normal life is at the heart of the story of Branwen Blythe in Wales, 2022. Journeying through a harrowing two weeks of Evelyn as Branwen, we are repeatedly thrown back in time to revisit several past lives of Evelyn and Arden.
The story of kill or be killed is layered through a long history of two teenagers in love and battle, over and over again, in an endless loop of poetry and bloodshed. With each new life, Evelyn wakes with no memory, only regaining patchy details and an impossible-to-deny pull toward Arden around puberty. Meanwhile, Arden seems cursed to remember every life, forever following Evelyn to their fateful 18th birthday as they once again sentence each other to death, and rebirth.
From award winning British author Laura Steven, Our Infinite Fates weaves a star-crossed-lovers tale seamlessly with light fantasy vibes and the raw emotion of a family on the brink of heartbreak. The love of a sister, the bond of true love, and the drive for autonomy bring this story to life, while questioning immortality as a gift, if an immortal soul can die repeatedly, and what kind of gift, or curse, could cause such a long and storied existence.
With an unexpected and satisfying twist thrown in more than 300 pages deep, Steven cleverly keeps us questioning the truth of Evelyn’s story in 2022 and all the glimpses of the past we are privy to along the way. Not until the final two chapters told at opposite ends of the time spectrum, are the intricacies of the truth, woven so deftly through the lives of Evelyn and Arden, finally and entirely revealed.
Captivating, breathtaking and hard to put down, Our Infinite Fates is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys fantasy or contemporary fiction and is looking to dip their toes into another pool to test the water. Suitable for readers 14 years and older, it will have you fighting to keep your eyes open long after bedtime for one more glimpse into the eternal lives of Evelyn and Arden.
