The Inside Dog

By Pip Harry & Carolyn Davis
Reviewed by Mia Macrossan
Pip Harry is well known in Australia for her work as editor and creator of books for teens and children. Here she has teamed up with debut picture book illustrator Carolyn Davis, born in Australia but now living and working in New York. Together they have produced a charming story about what happens when you find yourself outside your comfort zone.
Cuddles was an inside dog. He loved being inside winter and summer. He liked being dry, near treats and not having to chase anything. Then one day he is taken on a trip and finds himself outside with the farm dogs Tank, Gus and Spike whose job it is to muster sheep. He tries to muster sheep but they won’t listen. He tries the farm dog food and bedding but no, not for him. In desperation he tries to talk to the alpacas, but no, they are NOT helpful. How will he cope? The sensible farm dogs come to his rescue and Cuddles gradually starts to have fun on his farm stay holiday. He is still an inside dog but now he is ready for outside adventures too.
Children will love how Cuddles learns to adapt and enjoy his new surroundings. The expressive illustrations show Cuddles reacting to his ever changing situations.  I like how in the end Cuddles is still true to himself, he’s still an inside dog, but he has expanded his horizons to admit new things.
This charming book hides its lessons in plain sight but the gentle humour will keep children engaged to the satisfying end.
The excellent teaching resources provide discussion starters on change, house pets etc.,  and suggestions for class activities.
