Tomáš SMOT Svoboda is a graphic designer and illustrator from Brno, Czech Republic. Although Tomáš has previously illustrated three books, Up, Up, and Away is his debut as an author and illustrator. In creating the book, Tomáš gathered feedback from parents on what interests children most about aviation, crafting a book that reflects his personal passion for aviation while considering the child’s perspective.

Upon opening the book, the reader is greeted by Grandpa Edward and his two grandchildren, Molly and Simon. Grandpa Edward and the kids pop up throughout the book, breaking the fourth wall to create a fun, personal engagement that’s enticing to young readers.

Up, Up, and Away is divided into nine sections, starting with Greek mythology and the flight of Icarus and moving through the origins and historical evolution of aviation. While planes are a key feature, the book explores airships, hot-air balloons, and helicopters, and explains the aerodynamics and mechanics behind these amazing inventions.

Tomáš’s signature illustrations fill every page, complementing the facts and diagrams with soft coloured graphics and humorous character dialogue and closing with a visual timeline of all the important facts. Tomáš discusses each topic lightly but encourages readers to continue their exploration by providing a list of additional resources.

Up, Up, and Away is a perfect introduction to aviation and STEAM for any plane enthusiast. The engaging illustrations and text will captivate readers, young and old, as they join Grandpa Edward, Molly and Simon on their journey through the wonder and discovery of all things aviation.
