Milly Meelyu

This dual language picture book tells the story of a family of Spiny-tailed skinks (Egernia stokesii badia), known as Meelyu in the local Badimia language in Western Australia. They are unusual in that they live in family groups in a big castle of logs. Their environment is under threat from habitat degradation, mining  and feral cats. This story is a plea for nature conservation and guardianship as well as encouragiing connection to the land and its inhabitants.
Dr Holly Bradley is a conservation biologist who has here teamed up with Darryl Fogarty, a Badimia Elder to create this story for young readers. For the illustrator Corinne Fogarty, this story is especially meaningful as the meelyu is her totem animal.
Here are many opportunities to share histories and cultures, to introduce the concept of a totem and  environmental concerns especially the impact of introduced feral animals on indigenous wildlife.
The teaching resources lead the reader to discover more about this interesting animal but a page at the back with a photo and some basic details would have been helpful.
