Days of Warmth

By Gregg Dreise
Reviewed by Mia Macrossan

Indigenous Kamilaroi, Gregg Dreise, is an award-winning author, illustrator, artist, musician, and storyteller. His work includes Mad Magpie, Kookoo Kookaburra and Circles of Life, reviewed in StoryLinks. This latest board book blends early learning concepts in a charming introduction to  Australian animals and family, reflecting Gregg’s commitment to both.
Little goanna is feeling cold but Daddy is there to give warmth. Turn the page and its the next day and we meet sugar glider who is tired but Mamma is there to give cuddles. And so it progresses. As well as days of the week we meet turkey, quoll, butterfly and more who are experiencing a range of feelings, each one soothed by a different family member.
Babies will enjoy the clever art which uses white space and black line with some restrained colour. Toddlers will enjoy the exquisite animals and the loving family relationships shown. While the blazing Australian sun is shown on every spread the warmth shown here is of family in all its manifestations – affection, understanding and acceptance.
This little book is a great start for young children learning about family and their Australian heritage. It is a perfect gift for new parents who are starting their child’s library.
