Aslan and Benny

By Jemima Shafei-Ongu & Jade Goodwin
Reviewed by Mia Macrossan
Many children have an irrational fear of dogs and this story carefully explores how one child overcomes his fears and makes friends with the dog that suddenly enters his life.
Aslan is an active and enterprising young boy enjoying life in a large family. One day his cousins arrive with their new loud fluffy dog, Benny and Aslan is terrified. Through words and pictures we see all the different emotions and reactions both physical and mental that Aslan experiences as he gradually learns to make friends with Benny.
Lively illustrations show a vibrant affectionate family patiently helping Aslan overcome his fears. Jemima Shafei-Ongu states in her author’s note: ‘your brain can learn to become friends with your worries and do hard things, even when it tells you it can’t.’ This book can be a useful discussion starter in schools and families for children who have fears of this nature.
