We’re Going to the Zoo

Taronga Conservation Society Australia
Illustrated by Cate James
Reviewed by Mia Macrossan
‘Today is a special day. We’re going to the Zoo!’ begins this charming and informative account of mum and two children spending the day at Tarong Zoological Park. They do the rounds, seeing wallabies and emus playing together, keeping quiet near the koala enclosure (it’s nap time), and watching the chimpanzees play and climb. There is a beautiful double page spread of their visit to the giraffes with the Sydney cityscape with the opera house and the harbour bridge in the background. They  sit and have their lunch and watch the zookeeper feed the tortoise, then off they go to see more animals.
Cate James has used a soft colour palette for the artwork which creates gentle images filled with detail for young children to explore and discover. This is an enjoyable and informative read in a very attractive package. The larger format board book means that it will survive many enthusiastic readings. A lovely book to give to a child interested in animals, and bound to encourage a trip to the local zoo.
