This is such a valuable book. It is a practical, accurate no nonsense explanation of how babies are made with appropriate illustraions, now celebrating ten years in print . There is a charming sense of humour evident throughout that lightens the tone while still staying informative.
I love the beginning with its echoes of Cole Porter’s Let’s Do It hit song. We have a small selection of the funny stories parents tell their children: bought from a shop, chosen at the hospital, etc. I was told that my parents collected lots of silver paper!
The emphasis here quite rightly is how amazing our bodies are. Fiona uses all the correct terminology to describe the relevant anatomy and clearly labels the diagrams that illustrate what is being discussed.
Its a complicated process and Fiona takes her time to ensure that everything is carefully explained. Topics covered include Boys and girls, Becoming an adult, Sex and making a baby, Fertilisation, How the baby grows, Birth, Feeding the baby, concluding with Human bodies do all sorts of amazing things, but making little humans is one of the most amazing things of all.
This book is a must for a school library and for every parent bookshelf. It is the perfect resource to help you answer those awkward questions but why wait for them, use this book to start a conversation. It will clear up confusion, remove embarrassment, and give a child confidence in knowing the real ‘facts of life’.
