Kevin in a Stew

By Jacqueline Harvey &  Kate Isobel Scott
Reviewed by Sandy Driessens
“Kevin the Sheep is living his dream … To run his own restaurant with a vegetable theme. Choosing Wolfie to cook is a bit of a twist … What will Kevin find on the wolf’s shopping list?”
Kevin, the Sheep, has big plans for a restaurant and his relations, Shaun, Shauna, Sheryl and Shane are going to be his waiters. When he hires Wolfie, a reformed bad guy as the chef, Kevin has to insist that the menu be vegetarian… but on opening day, when his family hasn’t arrived, he fears the worst … they’re in the stew!
Jacqueline Harvey, author of the  Alice Miranda, Clementine and Willa and Woof series has reprised Kevin the Sheep in a new role as restauranteur. Alliteration with lilting rhythm and  rhyme make this an easy read and the voices of the characters ring true throughout.
Kate Isobel Scott, who was once a student of Harvey, has created colourful characters that show expression and action in a delightfully humorous manner. They are all loveable, even Wolfie. Her double page spreads have plenty of details of utensils and enticing food, that place you in the kitchen and the restaurant, all encouraging children to explore each page.
If you enjoy mushroom risotto or an eggplant lasagne, this is an hilarious story. It is a read-aloud book and will entertain young ones, but adults beware! if you try to serve up meat to impressionable little ones who read this book, you may have some heartfelt objections, especially with the twist at the end.
