The Lost Ponies: Millie and Stella Best Friends Forever

This is the first book in the Millie and Stella Best Friends Forever series by Noosa based Josephine Moon who usually writes adult novels. Jedda Robaard is an Australian author, illustrator and designer, based in Southern Tasmania whose books include I’m Ready for Preschool, and The Little Dragon Who Lost their Fire.
This is what I call a ‘horse story’, about two friends whose world is dominated by their love for their ponies. It is also a story of family and friendship, of friendly rivalry, coping with some stress, and solving a mystery.  When Millie and Stella are blamed for leaving gates open even though they know they left them shut it is up to them to find out how the ponies are getting out. Added to this is the tension created by their burning desire to be librarians for the new school library van (it is shaped like a ladybird!) There is some stiff competition, especailly from Gwyneth, a girl who is used to always getting her own way.
This story is so charming filled with loving family detail, school life, and information about caring for horses, all carefully written for readers aged 8+ who enjoy a gentle pace. Underpinning everything and the main strength of this novel is the thoughtful portrait of two supportive friends who look out for each other.  Jedda’s plentiful black and white line illustrations throughout are an added bonus.
