Hervé is well known for his innovative interactive picture books for very young children. They include Press Here, Mix it Up! and Tap! Tap! Tap! Dance! Dance! Dance! Here is another gem to add to your Tullet collection.
With careful step by step instructions he invites young children to draw and create dots, and grids. He then progresses onto flowers, birds, and cars culminating in a vivid colourful fold out spread showing some of the amazing things possible with a few dots, lines, smudges, and scribbles.
He is so positive and enthusiastic. ‘Go for it!, What a wonderful collection of scribbles!Beautiful! Magic! Perfect! he writes. (He is fond of exclamation marks). He is always totally encouraging. My favourite page is the blobbly square, drawn in thick black line with a smudge, a blot and a correction. He doesn’t need to say ‘don’t worry if you make a mistake, just go on’, he shows it on this page.
This is all about learning colours, playing with making marks, extending the meaning and exploring and experimenting with the emphasis firmly on enjoyment and encouraging creative thinking. Those dots and scribbles can be anything and often are as any adult proudly presented with a pre-schooler’s artwork will attest.
This book is an engine starter for creative minds, for those who love to play with colours and shapes, in other words for everyone.
