Jess Sanders is the author of Life Lessons for Little Ones series which include You Can Do Hard Things and You Know Yourself Best. She has also written Love Your Body and Be Your Own Man. Here she has focused on how to be a good friend, a timely reminder for all of us about the hows, whys and wherefores of lasting friendship.
As the title states there are five rules which are always the same and apply to everyone: respect body boundaries; listen actively; be kind; treat everyone equally and finally, stand up for others. Jess takes each one of these rules and explores how they could be applied in everyday situations. She explains about consent, about the importance of listening with an open heart and mind, being kind in word and deed, and accepting people for who they are and more.
César Barceló’s artwork is crucial is extending the text. Expressive visuals combined with plenty of action and bright colours underline Jess’s message and add nuance and feeling to the situations shown. Children will see parallels in their own lives, and, with the help of a supportive adult, be able to talk about times when maybe they could have been a better friend.
The Five Rules of Friendship will help children learn how to become a good friend and how to recognise when one of their mates is being one or needs one. The straightforward simple language, sensitive understanding of difficult situations and bright visuals make this book a valuable practical resource for children, parents and teachers. Recommended.
