Reading Pictures – Drawing Words A Database of Picture Books for Older Readers
Welcome to Reading Pictures – Drawing Words the new Picture Books for Older Readers database produced by The National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature with titles suitable for use from Grade 5 to secondary school.
This database combined with its attendant resources is an inspiring collection of Australian picture books that will promote a richer enjoyment of reading and challenge children and educators to a deeper understanding of life in Australia.
The database consists of 241 titles each with each entry accompanied by extensive links to the curriculum, a list of subject headings, a comprehensive annotation and links to relevant teaching resources.
The Australian children’s authors and illustrators listed employ a wide range of literary and artistic styles and display a great sensitivity and depth of understanding in dealing with difficult topics.
The books selected are more sophisticated in their use of literary techniques and in the way visual imagery is presented and integrates with the text. Many deal with complex issues or emotions. Every title has bibliographic information, recommended age levels, extensive subject headings, an annotation providing information about the book, Australian Curriculum (Version 9) links and a list of additional resources to expand the book and its subject matter.
