The Crayons Go Back to School

By Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers

Reviewed by Mia Macrossan

This creative team is known to many for the first in the ‘crayon’ series, The Day the Crayons Quit, 2018, and other crayon adventures. Drew Daywalt has also written The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors and They Call Me No Sam. Oliver Jeffers has been writing and illustrating many award winning picture books, the latest of which is Begin Again: A map of our past and guide for our future, reviewed in StoryLinks by Lara Cain Gray.
Our favourite crayons are going back to school after enjoying their holiday at the beach. It’s all very exciting – seeing old friends, making new ones. Being busy is fun. Different crayons enjoy maths, reading, writing, learning about science and making a mess during art.
This is a joyful colourful glimpse of what to look forward to when going back to school. The familiar crayons are shown in all their idiosyncratic variety with humour and understanding.
This book would be a useful discussion starter for anyone going back to school.
