How To Be A Friend

By Sarah Ayoub & Mimi Purnell

Reviewed by Mia Macrossan

Ayoub has written the YA novels Hate is Such a Strong Word, The Yearbook Committee and The Cult of Romance as well as collaborating with Purnell in two other picture books, The Love that Grew and Nice and Slow, the last three all reviewed in StoryLinksMimi Purnell, an illustrator and graphic designer born in England now lives in Australia.
Ayoub has chosen to use a rhyming text to give some tips and tricks on how to be a friend. ‘Through friends we learn about love and care, about taking turns, and how to share…Friends are sorry if they make mistakes, they’re generous and giving; they don’t just take.’ are two examples of Ayoub’s views on friendship, all illustrated by Purnell in her signature quiet, understated style.
This book, by focusing on the many positive aspects of friendship, encourages children to actively practice friendly behaviour. It all boils down to being a decent caring person, considerate of those around you in good times and bad.
This is a  timely book for children who are starting a new year at school, prep, kindy or playschool. Friends are so important in anyone’s life and learning and knowing how to make friends is an important life skill.
