Starting School – Picture books

Starting school for the first time or starting a new school year is such an enormous step. That first day is a cocktail of excitement anticipation, fear, anxiety and joy that has inspired many writers. Here is a selection of picture books that range across the whole spectrum.

The National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature Inc.has prepared  Starting School and School Days — Experiences we remember, a collection ranging from picture books about the exhilarating first day of school, to verse novels with deep emotions and on to the very complex (and extremely rewarding) novel about an adolescent kidnapped then changing her school mates forever.

Readings Bookshop has also prepared a wonderful long list of picture books, 61 titles, called Books About Starting School. You will find many appealing titles here that you may already have in your collection, or that you want to buy.
