There has been a great upsurge in the publication and popularity of graphic novels in the last decade. They have become main stream in that readers of all tastes and abilities read and enjoy them. They cover all the themes and issues found in ordinary texts but have the added bonus of highly stylised, highly skilled illustrations.
Reading a graphic novel is a different experience as descriptive words and phrases about feelings and place are minimal since much of that work is done by the illustrations. There are often plenty of sound words and the action is fast faced and immediate.
